COVID-19 may be on the decline, but there’s another virus spreading rapidly in our economic- and cultural-lives. It has slowly infected every institution in American life, from companies to nonprofits, from elementary schools to elite universities. Worst of all, it's an epidemic that even the best of science cannot cure.
"Woke capitalism" is the fashionable new idea that companies should serve not only their shareholders, but also pursue other social causes, too — like fighting racism, ending climate change, and so on. This new model of capitalism makes rosy promises of a more "equitable," diverse, environmentally-friendly world; but in reality this ideology robs us of our money, our voice, and our identity. By mixing morality with consumerism, the modern woke-industrial complex divides us as a people by preying on our innermost insecurities about who we really are. They sell us cheap social causes and skin-deep identities to satisfy our hunger for a cause and our search for meaning — at a time when we as Americans lack both.
That might make us better consumers in the short run, but it leaves us worse off as citizens in the end. This new trend of 'stakeholder capitalism' represents a threat to the integrity of American democracy itself. Do we live in a corporatocracy or a democracy? In a one-person, one-vote system; or, in a one-dollar one-vote system?
May's Liberty Forum speaker, Vivek Ramaswamy, will present a critical analysis of modern stakeholder capitalism and show us how to recapture our founding principles of liberty and justice for all. In his forthcoming book, WOKE, Inc: Inside Corporate America's Social Justice Scam, he rips off the mask of the burgeoning corporatist agenda, taking us behind the scenes into corporate America's boardrooms and five-star conferences, into Ivy League classrooms and secretive nonprofits. He calls it "the defining scam of our century," and by revealing its true nature, shows us all a hopeful way forward.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: Vivek Ramaswamy, a first-generation American born in Cincinnati of immigrant parents, is a Harvard College trained biologist, Yale Law School graduate and founder of a multi-billion dollar biopharmaceutical company focused on accelerating the development of transformative medicines. Mr. Ramaswamy emerged as a prominent national commentator on issues relating to democracy, capitalism, and American identity. His many op-eds have appeared in notable publications including The Wall Street Journal, National Review and Newsweek. He is a frequent guest on Fox & Friends, Tucker Carlson Tonight, and other national programs. Mr. Ramaswamy also serves on the boards of The Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity and The Philanthropy Roundtable.
